We are deeply saddened to acknowledge the passing of John Barnett (CNZM, ONZM), Chair of the Vista Foundation and one of New Zealand’s most influential and visionary figures in the screen industry.
John’s contribution to New Zealand film and television spans more than five decades. As the long-time head of South Pacific Pictures, he was instrumental in bringing iconic New Zealand stories to life, including Whale Rider and Sione’s Wedding.
As Chair of the Vista Foundation, John played a pivotal role in shaping its purpose to support the growth and sustainability of New Zealand’s film industry. His passion for nurturing emerging talent and advocating for local storytelling was at the heart of the Foundation’s mission.
“John's involvement, guidance and leadership of the Vista Foundation since 2018 has enabled it to encourage participation, develop talent and provide opportunities for people and projects within the NZ Film industry. These were key attributes John supported and I am sure all the people that have benefitted from our work and the programs we supported, like the Trustees of the Vista Foundation, are mourning the loss of John, both as a person and someone so influential in the industry,” said Brian Cadzow, Vista Founder and VF Trustee
“John was a great supporter of Vista from our earliest days, and later of our philanthropic efforts through the Vista Foundation. He became a trusted advisor and a friend to many of us at Vista, and we will miss him deeply,” said Murray Holdaway, Vista Group co-founder and Director.
The Vista Foundation will honour John’s legacy by continuing its work to support and empower New Zealand filmmakers, in line with the values and vision he championed.
